What makes autumn-winter such an enjoyable season is arguably the stunning colours all around. The reds, yellows, burnt oranges and browns that glimmer amongst the green outdoors, creating nature’s warming colour palette. As the temperatures drop and we spend more time cosying up at home, it’s the perfect time to take inspiration from beyond our window and bring some warming colours into your space. Think warm greens with hints of orange and browns that glow under dim lighting to create a super-snug feeling.
Making green or blue the core colour of your scheme can help ensure longevity beyond just the colder months while still leaning in to the cosiness of the current season. Paler shades like Tea Shop and Fresh Foliage are slightly lighter, making them a great choice for a colour that covers a lot of space if you want to brighten a room. These shades give that feeling of stepping out into wide open space and taking in the crisp air.
Or opt for deeper blues and greens like Neptune Seas and Rich Teal for a cosier cocoon. Wrapping these colours around your room won’t make your space feel smaller. In fact, you’ll find that darker colours add depth, and with that, comes warmth. With these as a base, it’s then simple to build your palette by adding in oranges and browns through carefully curated accessories.
Now that you have a beautiful nature-inspired base, bringing in rustic oranges and browns can dial up the autumn-winter vibes. Start with considering natural materials like wood and rattan for your furnishings. It’s an easy way to bring in earthy elements that take inspiration from woodland walks with leaves crunching beneath your boots. Now, add texture and layers with casually thrown cushions and blankets in oranges, reds or yellows, mimicking those fallen leaves and warming the space.
As the evenings grow darker, try having a number of lighting options around the room to create a cosy glow. A couple of lamps to light darker corners, a string of glittering fairy lights and some select candles are all you need to replicate the hue of an cosy afternoon.
A changing season is the perfect excuse to update your home and keep it flowing through the year. And if you choose a core colour that can take you through winter and into spring, it can be as easy as playing with accessories and pops of colour to keep your space feeling in the moment.
